This is a two-night luxury weekend in Khao Yai that balances the wild and the indulgent: a dawn in the national park, two of its best waterfalls, an afternoon of art and coffee, a vineyard lunch and plenty of time in a private pool. Adjust it to suit your pace. The order matters more than the exact times.
Before you go
- Base: stay in Mu Si or along Thanarat Road for the shortest drive to the park. See our pool villa resort guide.
- Transport: a car or private driver. Book a driver for the vineyard day if you plan to taste wine.
- Book ahead: dinner reservations, a spa treatment and, if you want one, a ranger-run night drive.
- Pack: layers for cool mornings, walking shoes and swimwear. Add leech socks in the rainy season.
Day 1: Arrive and unwind
Morning: leave Bangkok early
Leave by around 08:00 to beat traffic. The drive takes roughly three hours, depending on traffic. Stop for brunch at one of the cafes along Thanarat Road. See our cafe guide.
Afternoon: settle into your villa
Check in, then take your first swim in your private pool. If your resort has a spa, this is the moment for a treatment.
Evening: dinner close to home
Keep the first night easy, with in-villa dining or a short drive to a restaurant nearby. For Michelin Bib Gourmand Thai cooking in Mu Si, try Krua Kampan. See our restaurant guide. Turn in early, because tomorrow starts at dawn.
Day 2: The national park
06:00: through the gates
Be at the northern gate as it opens. Drive slowly and scan the roadsides and grasslands. Early morning is your best chance of elephants, deer, gibbons and hornbills. Stop at an observation tower. See our wildlife guide.
Mid-morning: Haew Suwat
Walk the short path down to Haew Suwat before the crowds arrive.
Late morning: Haew Narok
Continue to Haew Narok, the park’s tallest waterfall. The stairs are steep, so take your time.
Lunch and afternoon
Have a simple lunch near the visitor centre, then visit a viewpoint on the way out. See our viewpoints guide. Leave the park well before the 18:00 closing time.
Evening: celebrate
After a long day outdoors, end with your best dinner of the trip. Poirot, the French restaurant in a railcar at InterContinental Khao Yai, or the hilltop restaurant at sala khaoyai are both memorable choices. Alternatively, catch the bats leaving their cave near the park gate at dusk on your way back.
Day 3: Art, wine and a slow departure
Morning: a lazy start
Take breakfast by the pool. This is what the villa is for.
Late morning: art or wine
Choose between the Khao Yai Art Museum and its hilltop sculpture garden, or a tasting tour at PB Valley Khao Yai Winery, followed by lunch at its Great Hornbill Grill.
Afternoon: head home
Stop at a farm shop or cafe for something sweet, then drive back to Bangkok, ideally before the Sunday evening traffic builds.
Variations
- Couples: swap the waterfalls for a spa afternoon, and see our romantic weekend escapes.
- Families: add Primo Piazza and a night spotlighting drive. See family resorts.
- Rainy season: the waterfalls will be at their best, but check for viewpoint and trail closures.
