Where you stay in Khao Yai shapes your whole trip. The region is spread out, the national park is huge, and the drive from a hilltop villa to the park gate can easily take longer than you expect. This guide breaks Khao Yai down by area and by traveller type, so you can choose a base before you choose a hotel.

First, a quick orientation

Almost all hotels and resorts marketed as “Khao Yai” are in Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, outside the national park. The park itself covers about 2,166 square kilometres, and most visitors enter through the northern (Pak Chong) gate at the end of Thanarat Road. The park gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00.

The main areas

Mu Si and Thanarat Road: best for first-time visitors

Thanarat Road (Route 2090) runs from Pak Chong town up to the park’s northern gate, and Mu Si is the subdistrict around its upper stretch. This is the busiest part of Khao Yai, with resorts, cafes, farms and restaurants along the road and the side lanes. Stay here if the national park is your priority, especially for early-morning wildlife viewing.

Verified stays here include: Kirimaya, MUTHI MAYA and atta Lakeside, and Nimman Khaoyai*.

Pong Talong: open countryside

South-east of Pak Chong town, Pong Talong is quieter and more rural, with several larger resorts, including the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort, and the Italian-themed Toscana Valley development. Expect a longer drive to the park. Wineries such as PB Valley are on the western side of Pak Chong district, so plan a separate trip for them.

Wang Kata and the hills: views and seclusion

Higher ground with long views over the countryside. sala khaoyai is here. Good for a “villa as destination” stay where you leave the property less.

Pak Chong town: practical and budget-friendly

The town is the transport hub, with the railway station and bus connections. It has the widest range of mid-range and budget hotels, local markets and street food, but little of the scenery that draws people to Khao Yai.

Inside the national park

The park runs its own campsites, cabins and bungalows, which must be reserved in advance through the park, and some are available on weekends only. They are basic, but nothing beats waking up inside the park. See the national park website for current information.
