Khao Yai is one of Thailand’s best family destinations. It has wild elephants and hornbills in the national park, farms where children can feed animals, open countryside and a cooler climate than Bangkok. The right base makes all the difference, so this guide covers family-friendly resorts and pool villas, with practical tips for travelling with children.

What families should look for

  • Space: connecting rooms, two-bedroom suites or multi-bedroom villas.
  • Pool safety: private villa pools are rarely fenced. Ask about depth and barriers, or choose a resort with a shared shallow pool.
  • Activities: kids’ programmes, gardens, bikes or guided nature walks.
  • Location: a shorter drive to the park and farm attractions means less time in the car.

Family-friendly things to do

  • Wildlife spotting in the park: elephants, gibbons, hornbills and sambar deer. Early mornings are best. Ranger-led night spotlighting drives are popular with older children. See our wildlife guide.
  • An easy waterfall: Haew Suwat is a short walk from its car park. Swimming is not allowed.
  • Farms and animals: Primo Piazza has sheep and alpacas, and the region has several dairy and sheep farms.
  • A natural spring: Ban Tha Chang has clear blue water. Go early at weekends.

Tips for travelling with children

  • Pack layers. Mornings and evenings are cool from November to February.
  • Bring leech socks in the rainy season if you plan to walk forest trails. They are sold at the park visitor area.
  • Keep a distance from wildlife. Macaques along the park roads can grab food, and wild elephants must never be approached.
  • Plan for fuel. There are no petrol stations inside the park.
  • Watch cliff edges. Some viewpoints, such as Pha Diao Dai, have unfenced drops.
